About Us

Our organization started functioning in 1984 and now we have membership strength of more than 1 lakh and 50 thousand, comprising of all categories of persons with disability and their supporters. The social welfare & health department of the state of West Bengal have been issuing Health Certificates, Identity Cards, and Free Passes and introduced seat reservations in State Transport Buses as barrier free environment in our society. Higher increase in job reservation percentage wise for government jobs are a few achievements and this was particularly achieved through a long and persistent process of mass deputation, movements, seminars and other similar activities.

We had organized many awareness programmes to raise our voice against the absence of any legal framework in our country which later culminated into having a string of laws -Mental Health Act, 1987, RCI Act, 1992, PWD Act, 1995 and National Trust Act, 1999. Needless to mention, we collaborated our efforts with many other organizations working in the sector. We were one of the very few organizations who called for a disability policy in the days before the PWD act was enacted. We held a seminar demanding it way back in 1989 where the then social justice minister Shri Ramvilas Paswan was present. Our then president Sadhan Gupta, former parliamentarian and advocate General of our state, made some very pertinent observations as we advocated the need for the policy. As many as 14 states participated in the convention.

As a result of our consistent awareness campaigns; the erstwhile state government changed the rules to issue certificates to the disabled persons. We considered certification as the main focus of our activity because the health certificate/identity card is essential for a disabled person to access all the entitlements due to him. Previously, the certificates were not free of cost but now, it is provided free of cost and the sub-divisional hospitals are also empowered to issue the certificates. To emerge as the nerve centre in the eastern part of India with multi-dimensional activities with the objectives to explore and develop to the fullest, the potential that lies in each individual with disability, in order to bring them to the mainstream of the society.

We are planning to provide aids and appliances such wheel chairs, tricycles and other such prosthetic aids to persons with disability belonging to the poorer sections. We hope this kind of ventures would be beneficial to scores of persons with disability belonging to the poorer sections. We published a journal of our organization to highlight our views regarding various subjects pertaining to disability and about our activities namely “PRATISPARDHI BARTA” Our organizational activities are in full swing in the districts and in Uttardinjpur district we have organized a vermin compose project for the economic rehabilitation of persons with disability. Besides the above, we organized a lifelong shelter for persons with intellectual disabilities in Hooghly district.
